The Michigan Young Men’s Health Study

This study was a community-based participatory statewide needs assessment of 180 young Black gay and bisexual men.

The study had two phases:
  1. In the first phase, we interviewed 21 key informants around the state from community-based organizations, county health departments, the state health department, and state’s HIV prevention planning body on what they saw as their key informational needs and how they would use specific pieces of information we might collect to inform policy and program decisions. Working with a group of six young men from the target population who served as study co-investigators, each of whom lived in one of the five high-incidence counties in the state, we developed an interview guide that was informed by their experiences and insights regarding young Black gay and bisexual men’s lives, what we had learned from our key informants, and a review of available empirical research on young Black gay and bisexual men.
  2. In the second phase, we interviewed a statewide sample of 180 young men in depth. The study was funded by the Michigan Department of Community Health.
