Adapting FIO to youth at risk

Adapting FIO to Youth at Risk:
The Safe in the Sheets Research Project

This 2-year project was funded by the Families and Communities Together (FACT) Coalition. The project was conducted in partnership with the Ruth Ellis Center in Highland Park, MI. The Center serves homeless, throwaway, runaway, and street youth who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered. Most of the youth served at the Center are Black. The goal of this project was to adapt an evidence-based HIV prevention curriculum originally entitled “The Future Is Ours” (FIO) to meet the needs of the adolescent and young adult bisexually-experienced women who attend the Ruth Ellis Center and to assess the feasibility of conducting a pilot randomized control trial of the new curriculum, “Safe in the Sheets”, with a population of young women who are bisexually active.
